Theatre scenarios look dramatic and teach little. A useful stress test asks whether the model still ranks risk sensibly when a few realistic conditions move together — funding costs, partner API latency, or a sudden mix shift toward thin-file applicants.
Prefer plausible joint moves
Single-factor shocks are easy to chart and easy to dismiss. Joint moves mirror how fintech books actually break: acquisition channel changes coincide with underwriting tightening, which coincides with collection capacity limits.
Separate model fragility from book fragility
Some losses appear because the portfolio is exposed, not because the score failed. Document both. Auditors notice when teams blame the model for a funding freeze.
Write the decision the stress informs
Every scenario should end with an action: retrain, constrain approvals, raise monitoring frequency, or accept the residual. Scenarios without owners become archive material.
Teams rehearsing these conversations often start with our topic brief and then enroll in a cohort.
